The Highway Technician Senior functions as a project inspector on smaller projects and as an inspector for some phases of construction on larger projects. 
 
Their responsibilities include:

  • quality control testing according to established procedures
  • preparing reports
  • documenting project activities
  • performing project related technical duties 
  • other activities as needed in the resident office
  • providing training as necessary to fellow inspectors to help them understand assigned work activities
  • performing liaison duties with property owners, utility companies, contractors, consultants and other government agencies

The Highway Technician Senior must be able to work with a minimum of supervision as a project inspector on smaller projects, be to work with a project manager on larger projects and able to work with other inspectors, contractors, producers, suppliers and other departments. Specific knowledge of highway and bridge construction methods and inspection is required. General knowledge of construction survey is desired. This Highway Technician Senior position must be able to use or have the ability to learn to use computer hardware and software in their work using FieldBook, Project Scheduling, MS Office and DOT internal communication software.
 
Lifting
Ability to perform heavy work, occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling various items/using force from 50 - 100 lbs. Team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 lbs.
 
CDL 
Must possess a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within 30 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment. Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
 
Additional Requirements

  • Post offer, pre-employment physical.
  • Requires certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment.
  • Must respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours. 

Shift Monday through Friday, 7:45AM to 430PM. Some overnight travel may be required. Occasional overtime required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire.   • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), this job requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment all persons are required to have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
  • Employees must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
  • Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
